Maybe it got included from surrounding rock as the lava flowed upward. Like carbon, the shorter-lived uranium-series isotopes are constantly being replenished, in this case, by decaying uranium supplied to the Earth during its original creation.
This scheme is used to date old igneous and metamorphic rocksand has also been used to date lunar samples. Thorium then behaves similarly to the long-lived parent isotopes we discussed earlier. This temperature is what is known as closure temperature and represents the temperature below which the mineral is a closed system to isotopes.
In volcano eruptions, a considerable amount of gas is released with the lava. One can understand this by the fact that the clock did not get reset if one accepts the fact that the magma "looks" old, for whatever reason.
And quite a few other dates are often much, much farther off. The carbon dioxide mixes throughout the atmosphere, dissolves in the oceans, and via photosynthesis enters the food chain to become part of all plants and animals.
Second, there have been sufficient tests to show that during their formation in the crust, igneous and metamorphic rocks nearly always release their entrapped 40Ar, thus resetting the K-Ar clock.
Circular Reasoning or Reliable Tools?
At the moment of formation, as two nucleii collide, the uranium nucleus will be somewhat unstable, and thus very likely to decay into its daughter element.

There is a lot of flexibility in the design of such examples, as I indicate, and it is reasonable to assume that some of these examples would be natural. The methods work too well most of the time. Among other problems documented in An example of radiometric dating FAQ by Steven Schimmrichmany of Woodmorappe's examples neglect the geological complexities that are expected to cause problems for some radiometrically-dated samples. This suggests that what is occuring is some kind of a mixing phenomenon, and not an isochron reflecting a true age.
Here we will look briefly at some other non-radiometric dating techniques. In the first place, I am not primarily concerned with dating meteorites, or precambrian rocks.
Radiometric Dating Methods
This makes carbon an ideal dating method to date the age of bones or the remains of an organism. Thus, the Earth and the atmosphere now contain about equal amounts of 40Ar, and the total could be generated if the Earth contained only ppm potassium and released half of its 40Ar to the atmosphere.
It can't float in mid-air, particularly if the material involved is sand, mud, or molten rock. The chemistry of uranium and thorium are such that they are in fact easily removed from each other.
